On the web you can find catalogs of games, unfortunately these sites are dedicated to provide information such as year of release, selling price and game type.

Collectors must to go to sales pages as Mercado Libre in Latin America or EBay Usa / Europe to buy and get a game, we are enthusiastic collectors several exchanges of online games

CREATING A NEW CATALOG

Colnect can attract several collectors and gamers providing dialing within a catalog games wishing to find, share, take or sell principal reason for use of Colnect.

Hello Alejandro,

This is great that you are initiating this idea of a category with so much information. Are you willing to coordinate such a category if we build it?

About the category in general: Do you mean only retro style cartridges that go with the consoles you mentioned (not all video games collecting in the same category)? Do you know collectors groups or communities for these collectibles?

I reviewed the information and the NIF you sent and I have a few question to move this forward:

Navigaion:

1/ I'm not sure I understood the navigation. Is it: Console → Region ? Does "Region" mean geographical region? I didn't see the "Region" mentioned on the NIF you submitted, and you mentioned that it is not always known.

NIF:

2/ The initials "CG" or "GC" are taken already, so they cannot be used. I suggest maybe "CR" for CartRidges.

2/ How do you suggest the Catalog Code to be structured?

3/ "Dimensions" column should be split into two columns: "Width" and 'Height". Why do you think it should be in "Inches" instead of "Cm"?

4/ Could you explain what is the "Licensed by" column mean? Is it something well known to most game cartridge collectors?

5/ I thin "Genre" should be picked from a scroll down list. What do you think? Can you create such a list?

6/ "Main Picture file" refers to a pictures of the front of the cartridge? Is there a need for a back picture?

Thank you for your enthusiasm to contribute :)

Response

If this category is attached to Colnect,please count whit me.

I had the opportunity to collaborate in several areas to Colnect,

I have been a translator from English to Spanish for a long time,

I was also manager Colnect page on Facebook for a short time.

About the general category

Video games have many supports including, cartridges, diskettes, CDs, DVDs, GD-ROM, GOD,

Wii Optical Disc, Blue ray and even the internet. They will continue to grow with the advancement of technology.

My idea is include in Colnect catalogs "Game cartridges", other media can be added as well (The category can be change to "Video Games")

I think Video Games is much better, this includes all the available media and these can be added later without having to create new categories such as DVDs games or Blue Ray games.

Do you know collectors groups or communities for these collectibles?

There are several forums but no one provides the opportunity to exchange, collectors must do exchanges via email, forums or via Facebook.This is the main reason why it is a good idea to add this category Colnect.

About Nif

I have no experience creating Nif, I edited this for another category (Lego catalog).but yes i can made the scroll down genere list

Name and Region

If the catalog have positive creation may be needs to be call VG for Video Games.

About region refers to "television encoding system" exists, is a classification of games that are compatible for various countries, this image from Wikipedia shows the distribution around the world

Secam does not apply to video games (is for other uses) PAL and NTSC are the only

[404 LINK REMOVED]

License, Dimensions and Pictures

Many games are licensed from the creators, as Nintendo or Sony, other games are made by other companies, it's easy to know who is the license, this appears when you start the game, this is very important to differentiate real games of Hacks Games or No License usually rare to find, about the size, I'm not sure, if you create more items like CDs and more, this option have to change. In the case of cartridges need only see the front, back labels are not

Struture

I made this picture to show how I think that can be the catalog, Also I include the media support for each one

[404 LINK REMOVED]

Thank you so much for evaluate my proposal, let me know any other question,I'll be very happy to answer.

Hello Alejandro,

I am not sure if it is better to create a general "Video Games" category, instead of "Game Cartridges". It is a very large category that maybe better being built from blocks.

We will be happy if you would be willing to take on the coordination of the category when the time comes.

Regarding the NIF I will provide a bit of guidance as to how to create it so it could be accepted to Colnect. If you are having trouble or questions with the creation of the NIF, please don't hesitate to ask.

Thank you for explaining the different fields. Could you then create scroll down lists for all those columns that have specific options, such as the Region and License?

As to the Dimentions - I am not sure. I think for now, "Width" and "Height" will be good. They have worked well for the other categories. And every collector submitting the NIF can fill in the number freely. For other kinds of Video Games collectibles another NIF can be created as they will be in a different category. What do you think? I'm trying to see what will be most correct and least confusing for collectors browsing on Colnect.

Thank you for the illustration of the Navigation, that helps.

I have seen this thread and I want to thank you Alejandro for the detailed presentation of the new category. It is well structured and nearly everything important is already included. :D

And as this is currently discussed I also want to share my thoughts regarding "include only these cartridge games" cs. "include all video games".

I support the latter one - a category video games.

As the goal is to have a structure beginning with consoles, it wouldn't be a problem to have all kinds of consoles. And - as there are currently 7 consoles presented, adding all there wouldn't make the list too long. (I thought about things like PlayStation, X-Box and so. In addition, all these fit to the NIF options genre, size, players, year)

This might help: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_v ... e_consoles

In addition, that way it is still possible for collectors to see just the games of consoles they collect.

edit: I saw the discussion is rather about including Cds and so on. This is probably more difficult to decide. But I think all consoles are computers and a Personal Computer which can read Cds is just an other form of that. So, I would say yes, include them. But, as they are not different regarding the other consoles regarding structure, it might also be an option to first build the category and include the items and later see if it makes sense to add CDs and so on.

A navigation suggestion:

What about

console --> genre --> list ?

If region is known in many cases

console --> region (--> genre) --> list

will be better.

Question regarding regions / languages:

Are some games issued in different parts of the worlds as the same game but with different languages? For that case, it might make sense to add a field "language" to the NIF. However, I think several games are multi-language then.

Dana - take whatever suggestion seems to be useful :wink:

Maybe I need to consult tcawe a bit about the scope of the category (Video Games / Cartridges), I think both are possible. Maybe video games will be better for adding different kinds (consoles/cds...) under the same NIF.

Alejandro, what do you think of these suggestions? Regarding the navigation as well?

Thank you for the NIF, it looks much better. The I see you deleted the scroll down list of "Players", you don't think it is necessary?

Do you think this NIF could be used for ALL the Video Games category? Does this include computer games or only games that require their own type of console?

Hello Dana

Yes, I think it would look better this way.

Console ---> Region ---> List

Year ---> 1970-2012 --> List

New ---> List

I delete the scroll down list of "players", because there are games where you can play 4 or more, even when playing online the number increases.so far I think that works for all consoles including the PC.

Dedicated consoles like "atari pong" also need to be included in the catalog?

These consoles have not interchangeables games, so that the collectible be the same console.

Colnect think catalogs as exchange list only, or also just a general list?

Thanks

Hello Alejandro,

Thank you. The notes you added on the NIF itself help too. I have a couple of questions, as I am trying to bring to a finalized version of the NIF to examine:

1/ For the navigation: Is "Region" known in most cases to the collector of the item? If it is not, maybe it should have such a place in the navigation.

2/ On the NIF: Can you explain what the "Game Content" column refers to?

Regards

Thank you very much for taking the time to review the NIF, Region is well known,(usually a type of game is available only inside a region, as pal in Europe.) This is very important to know because, European games can not be played in America and vice versa. (only possible if the console is multiregion or mod)

About "Game Content" (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Video_gam ... ing_system), if we know the console and the region game, would also be important know for what different age groups can be the game (because of the content of the game) some people may be affected by very graphic fight scenes. is similar to the type of programming that is broadcast on tv "only for adults" or "for any group of people"

if you need to I edit the NIF please let me know

Regarding the "Game Content", thank you for explaining. I see there are different rating systems available ("Entertainment Software Rating Board", Australian, British, Pan European...) with different age limits. Are they all accepted, as fa as the filling of the NIF is concerned, or only a certain one of them?

On the "Players" column, wasn't there a scroll down list there before?

Very friendly Dana

About the "Game Content" I used the system "Pegi" I did a correction and included the system "ESRB", covering the classification systems of the USA and Europe, I put back the option for the maximum number of players.

Thanks for taking the time to read this, any other changes just let me know.

greetings Alex

I have taken the NIF and fixed it up a bit to be in the format of a proper NIF (added the proper links, moved the lists to a hidden sheet). Please use this version from now on.

About Consoles: I see the list includes certain consoles, but some not. Maybe I don't understand the definition enough, but what about other consoles such as Playstation, xbox?

Soon I think we can try out the NIF a bit :)
