Capability to mark item series "complete"

Postoleh WoodyWoodruff »

I noticed that last May, garbanguly asked about viewing stamps by series. I collect banknotes and strive to collect complete series from countries of interest. Would it be too difficult to add the ability to mark a series as "complete"? The definition of complete would be up to each collector. For example, in some countries, I try to collect each signature and date variant in a series, but in other countries, I am satisfied with just one example from a set of variants.

Thanks for your consideration,

Brad Woodruff [WoodyWoodruff]

Values of property lists aren't really designed to be custom modified, marked, etc. Automatic showing the completeness of series (years, themes, etc.) based on the correlation between item numbers in catalogs and personal collection lists seems to be more relevant. In any case you are welcome to add a poll to see how many members support the suggestion.

Dear Skyforger:

Thank you for your prompt reply; however, I do not completely understand your response. I don't know what you mean by "values" nor do I understand what a "property list" is. Perhaps my initial inquiry was not clearly written. I am asking if it is possible for a Colnect user to indicate that he or she considers his/her collection of a specific series of banknotes is complete. For example, if I have all the banknotes I want in the series Canada/2001-2011 Issue series, I could tick a box somewhere indicating that I consider my collection of this series is complete. The definition of "complete" would be up to the user, and marking of a series as complete would be done manually by the user; it would not be automatic.

Thank again for your consideration,

Brad Woodruff

Dear Brad,

A series list is an example of a property list and series names are its values. You've explained your suggestion clearly, and the addition of any checkboxes directly to property lists (even if only when viewing personal collection lists) doesn't seem to be a nice option, but probably highlighting could be a solution. So, please, add a poll to know whether the community would be interested in such a feature and if well supported it will be considered for implementation.

I am asking how many Colnect banknote collectors would find it useful to be able to indicate in their Colnect collection that they consider that their collection of a specific series of banknotes is "complete". For example, if I have all the banknotes I want in the series Canada/2001-2011 Issue, I could tick a box somewhere or otherwise indicate within Colnect that I consider my collection of this series complete. The definition of "complete" would be up to the user, and marking of a series as complete would be done manually by the user.

Dear Skyforger:

Thanks for the clarification. I should have been able to understand your original response since I am an epidemiologist and data analyst by trade, but unfortunately, we use slightly different terminology.

I have created a poll. Let's hope banknote collectors respond by voting.

Kind regards,

Brad Woodruff

I think that having 'completed' a series can be noted, in my humble opinion, perfectly in the NOTES field (as a public or private note) by writing 'COMPLETE SERIES' for example.

Dear chemaleal:

Thanks for your vote and your comment. What NOTES field do you refer to? At least in the banknote category, I see only Collection. Swap, Wish, and Ignore. Of course, there is a small comment box next to each of these fields, but then you would have to fill in this comment box individually for each banknote in the series to mark the series 'complete'. I would like to be able with one click to mark a series complete.

maybe it would also be a good idea for the sugar envelope catalog.

There have been many series published, complete and incomplete.

This new feature would be very useful in all categories, especially ifa collector is not willing to split a complete set when swapping. They could easily indicate which items are meant to be swapped as a complete set while others may be swapped as a unit.

I 100% support your "Brad Woodruff" idea. The "Completed Series" checkbox should definitely be added to all collections.

"tuixons" suggested it for Sugar Packets, and I recommend it for beer coasters.

We're using the same method as "chemaleal."

In the description, I'm writing FULL-S for completed series and FULL-P for completed puzzle coasters.

Regards

Mustafa

What everyone would definitely like, in my opinion, is to have a value assigned to their entire collection.

This may be indeed a nice feature across most categories that use the series field (the Postcard category uses this field differently, so I don't see a use there). I do see a potential problem due to the manual assignment (which otherwise is a good idea, because different collectors will have different opinions about when a series is complete): There are series (in banknotes and elsewhere) where the issuing of items in the series has not yet ended. So what happens if a new item is added to the series (this could even happen to already completed series if a new variant is discovered)? Ideally (from my perspective) the series will change from "complete" to "new items added" or something like it, and I'm either notified each time this happens, or I have a list of such series with new items that I can pull from my profile (ideally from the "My Lists" dropdown), so I can go through these series, ideally get the new item(s) highlighted and can then decide if I set the series back to complete or change it to not complete. If that's not possible (or too much work), an alternative is that any series I marked as complete that gets a new item added is reverted to incomplete, in this case a notification to me is mandatory or I will never find such series. If a series will not change away from complete if a new item is added, this feature is not helpful for me.

I have not yet voted, because my vote depends on how the feature would behave if a new item is added to a series that I marked as complete. If I can either easily find such series and the new items or am notified of each new item in my completed series, I will vote yes, otherwise no.

Best regards,

Martin Stricker

I collect Starbucks mugs, christmas market mugs, gift cards, beer coasters, bottle caps, tickets, souvenir tokens, postcards, advertisement pens, bookmarks, match boxes, dessert lids + more

Ja, aber nur wenn bei den Briefmarken Serien unterschieden wird, ob es sich um Bogenmarken und Rollenmarken handelt.
