How can we improve the Stamps catalogue?(Update: 7-Feb)

Collecting Stamps or generally interested in philately? You may write about everything here but better stick to subjects that relate to stamps and appeal to collectors. Mind you we have a separate category and forum for philatelic products.

What do you think of the Stamps Catalogue as of now?

I like it as is.

ToninoA - members who actively help on Colnect keep getting free premium membership. Putting a specific number of stamps may reduce the quality of submissions on one side and perhaps stop motivating contributors who add a lot more.

Any issues with the stamps catalogue should either be talked in the stamps collectors forum or send a PM to footy68

Friends collectors,

I am an advanced collaborator and I noticed that in the catalog Colnect there are many stamps without photos. Now I appeal to all those who are in possession of some of these stamps and invite them to scan them, possibly with a black background, and then to send me the images appended to a message.

I thank in advance those who will want to work with me to improve our catalog Colnect.

Tonino

I am just wondering when is this going to be available?

Ability to tag "used" and "new" separately, for collection/wish/swap list

thanks

Johnson

In the list of stamps "Emissions" there is "Cinderellas" (16) that the Italian version is wrongly translated "Animali" = Animals, so, probably, some contributors have mistakenly attributed this category to some stamps depicting animals. The most appropriate translation in Italian language should be "Non Ufficiale".

Back after a short time away from my collection. Thank you for all the work in improving the stamp catalogue. I especially like being able to search by Face Values - I have managed to fill nearly 90% of my known collection on Colnect now as it really has improved the way I look for stamps. Now to get onto adding the remaining unknown collection.

The other feature I like is the use of Condition and Number fields. The one suggestion is the ability to provide multiple values, say 1U and 4 MNH for the same stamp. At the moment, I can choose 5 as the number, but no way of saying both Mint and Used.

Hi everybody!

While filling in my collection of DDR-stamps I stumbled upon this:

The stamps Mi:DD 817X and Y differ only in their watermarks.

According to the Michel catalogue from 2002, "DD 817X" is worth 10.00€ and 817Y 0.30€, so their ratio in the number of collected stamps should be something like 3:100.

But actually in the database we have 233 times 817X collected and 11 times 817Y collected which is a quite unrealistic result.

My guess is that many of the collectors do not mind the difference in watermarks (as I sometimes dont), and just choose the first stamp of that group. By forcing the collector to decide which watermark (or a similar feature) is the correct one for his stamp when he does not know it, we are getting many incorrect classifications of stamps in the database.

What I would suggest to do is to implement something like groups, where it is possible for the collector to mark, that he has at least one of the stamps of that group, which is all that this collector knows. In that case the group would consist of all stamps that are special cases of Mi: DD 817 which are 817X and 817Y.

Of course there should be a more detailed view available, like the existing view of variants, where the collector can define precisely what stamp it is.

Now assume somebody wants to swap that stamp where only the group is given: he can either

- accept the only roughly classified stamp and see what he gets

- or help the other collector to correctly classify the details of his stamp

I think groups could improve the correctness of the database.

Regards,

farad

If this could be possible, it would be fine for me. I collect stamps worldwide and I don't care so much about minor differences. It is sometimes hard to know wich stamp I have: X, Y, C, XI, XII and so one.

Though I collect some countries more specially and in those cases I want to know also the minorities.

When mentioning specific stamps on Colnect, please always include an exact link to the page containing them.

We've implemented the variant group feature already so it's quite easy to see when a stamp has variants. Whether or not members use this information is a different problem. Members are required to only mark items they physically have but mistakes do happen.

For me, it's the more important failuire of all the site.

There have to be a manor of distinguish types of collectors.

If I'm a beginner, the important is to have a stamp of a number in the catalogue.

If I'm a collector semi-advanced there are variants I want to be in the catalogue.

If I'm a semi-profesional I have started to investigate the watermarks and other variants.

There has to be a way to limit the details of the catalogue. If not, the newbies are silenced because there too many things for to find there stamps, and on

the other hand there are no way to say "my stamp isn't inside this catalogue" or "I am not capable to find my stamp in this ocean of information".

Both posibilities aren't wise for this type of website. You need to be amigable for a lot of types of users.

Give them a easily way of limitacions in the catalogue.

Example: I'm living in Spain, but my collections comes from Germany. I'm used to use Michel ... imagine how strange is to find all registers

ordenated to other catalogues.. I have to jump pages or stamps, recovering registries, decide in variations I never have heard from....

Much easier would be, first apointing a number of the catalogue, and later to distingiush between different variants.

"I know I have this stamp, but I don't know of which variant it is... Later on I will try to distinguish it."
