I think, really, that for tickets TMB and ATM Barcelona transport ( In Spain ) are two large groups:
Original printed type ( OPT ) - Year, rate type , number of areas ... default are printed in origin . Effect: all tickets in the same model have identical characteristics are equal. In this case the classification is very simple, like the stamps.
Machine printed type ( MPT ) - Year , type of rate , number of areas ... are subsequently printed by machine . result : all tickets in the same model may have different characteristics . In this case the classification is more complicated , but it gets easier if we adopt the system used with coins , taking some of the characteristics ( year and zones for ex.) such as varieties of the same ticket when is an additional script over the same basical ticket.
If it is very difficult to perform this partition, we could try to change the current categories with ones that are more operational and less confusing in this particular case.
Now the categories for ATM are :
1 ATM Zone - 90 % of the tickets ATM and TMB
metro - 95 % tickets used in Metro is not exclusive, normally is combinated.

With this classification, the same ticket can be in multiple categories. If you look in each category, are transport tickets of 1 Zone in five of them. Inside Metro, all the tickets are combinated, not only for Metro. Surely they were used in the subway, but also could have been used in other mean of transport.
A good solution for ATM and TMB Barcelona ( Spain ) would be , for example, take the different tickets types like a categories.

OTHERS - Curiosities, undefinited tickets, roundtrips, Use unlimited in a period ( one day, five days...) - Promotional tickets, Tourist tickets.
With this distribution, every ticket will have its category. And we could add "Zones" and "Printed System" how a new features.
