On 9 August 1960, Albert Kalonji (b. 1919) proclaimed the region of South Kasaï as the Etat Autonome du Sud Kasaï and styled himself as the Chef Suprême du Peuple Muluba et Protecteur Incontesté des Tribus Associées à son sort (Supreme Chief of the Muluba People and Protector of the Associated Tribes). On 30 March 1961, the Great Council of the Chiefs awarded him the title of Mulopwe (King or Emperor). The autonomous state was abolished in 1962.
