Alfonso López Michelsen was born in Bogotá on June 30, 1913. He studied at the modern gymasium in Bogotá, graduated from high school in Belgium and obtained his law degree at the University of Rosario in Bogotá.
He carried out postgraduate studies in civil law, public law and constitutional law at the University of Chile and at Georgetown University. He was professor of Constitutional law at the National University of Colombia, University of Rosario and at the Free University of Bogota.
He created the MRL, the Liberal revolutionary movement, in 1960, and won the presidential election in 1974, and with the slogan "the clear Mandate." He ruled between 1974 and 1978.
President Alfonso López Michelsen has been recognized as one of the leading contemporary thinkers in Colombia. During their government, women were first permitted to enter the military career; the HIMAT (Colombian Institute of Hydrology, meteorology and land adaptation) was created; he established the majority age at 18 years and was able to restore Colombia's relations with Cuba. He participated in the signing of the Torrijos-Carter treaty, for the Return of the Panama Canal to Panama.
After retiring from active politics and after refusing to be a candidate for the National Constituent Assembly of 1991, embarked on a strong campaign for humanitarian exchange since 2002. In 2005, he participated in favor of the passage of a law granting economic rights to homosexual couples and returned to the public square to support liberalism in the elections of 2006.
In his last days he was an honorary member of the Colombian Academy of Jurisprudence and collaborator of the newspaper El Tiempo, in which he maintained a Sunday column.
