The quay was built in 1888, conceived as the final part of the Barranquilla Maritime terminal located in the the township of Sabanilla,Puerto Colombia. Its design and construction were in charge of the Cuban engineer Francisco Javier Cisneros. It was considered one of the most notable buildings of the nineteenth century in Colombia because of its importance as the main seaport and the fact that it was at the time the second longest pier in the world.
