Soakable Self-adhesive Stamps

Postby astamper1000 »

Would it be possible for Colnect to create a field where collectors could note which used self-adhesive stamps can be soaked in water to remove paper from used stamps?

That would be a good idea, since it's hard to know in advance which ones will come off easily with just water and which will not. If the editors don't want to create a new field, maybe this could be written in the description field?

I like the idea of a new field because it could be sorted on and found easily.

Would not be a good idea for a new field since it would only apply to a subset of stamps within the entire catalogue. Fields should be for characteristics that all stamps have

So this would be something much better suited to being added as a note in description for those collectors who feel the need to soak their self-adhesive stamps

In the end, my personal preference when it comes to used self adhesive stamps is to trim carefully around them and leave them on their envelope paper rather than deal with the hassle of trying to soak the stamps off paper. Especially for USA, where the vast majority of issues simply do not come off paper cleanly.

Other fields in the stamp catalog don't apply to all stamps: perforation, watermark, catalog.

All stamps are either perforated or imperforate

All stamps either have a watermark or do not have it

All stamps have a catalogue id of some sort, be it a published catalogue or a Colnect Code

But not all stamps need to have special instructions on whether or not they should be soaked off paper due to the adhesive used on them - this really is only an issue for SOME self-adhesive issues over the past 30 years or so.

This kind of information, I would argue, would best be noted in the description field for the specific stamps in question, much as we note stamps printed in soluble inks that should not be immersed in water to soak them off paper, as the design will disappear (see for example Netherlands Indies stamps)

One option would be to branch it out from the "Self-Adhesive" value of the Gum field, like "Self-Adhesive, unsoakable" - or the other way round.

However, since I feel there may be a subjective area of SA's that are just very reluctant to come off in water, I agree with DJCMH we might be better off with using the description field.j
