New & Improved: "Find Similar Items on eBay"

Postby Dana-Levitas »

We are happy to announce the launch of our new and improved "Find Similar Items on eBay" link. We on Colnect have been working for a while to better the search in order to bring you, the collectors, the most relevant, accurate results. You can read more about this improvement here.

Try it out now and let us know what you think. How do you like the new options for search? Which sales are most interested in seeing? Not enough results? Too many? We will very much appreciate your feedback. We are still checking, testing, and we'll be glad to implement any changes that would make it best suited for all :)

Maybye he pretends also that colnect includes a "Find similar items on other website", or even replace Ebay search for other website search.... :D

Althought both sites have colectables almost at the same level, i find other website to be mor "expensive" and "user selectible", if you know what i mean.... ;D

I have personally contacted Sebastien from other website and tried several times to establish some partnership between Colnect and other website as we often cater to different needs of the same people. Unfortunately, although I put some good time and efforts into it, nothing ever came up. So no, other website is not likely to be featured on Colnect.

There are no processes with other website. The "Find similar items on eBay" improvement have already been implemented. You can try it yourself and let us know what you think.

Dana, such search engine most probably is not going to work properly. As example: Imagine, You want to find a certain philatelic stamp, listed on Colnect file, via eBay... The stamp has certain catalog number and every catalog has their own numeration. Michel, Yvert, Stanley Gibbons, Scott, Zumstein, AFA, Facit... It is a hard (if possible) task to sincronize all the catalogs... You cannot really find anything well on INDIA stamps on eBay if You use Michel catalog numbers... You will need SG (Stanley Gibbons) numeration, for Germany better is Michel, for France, probably Yvert, for Denmark nationally AFA, less effective will be Facit, but in eBay.com You will need Scott numbers... how to live with that?

Hello JanisD ,

Thank you for your feedback. The eBay search icon system does not use the catalog codes. That is from several reasons, some you mentioned, some others and partly because some sellers simply don't mention the catalog code. It makes for too little results. The idea is to find not an exact stamp - but the nearest most accurate range of, including, if possible, the exact requested item.

German branch of eBay (eBay.de) attempts to string users to Michel catalog, but other branches do not. If You work with American eBay, it is to referred to Scott catalog search. Sellers who do not mention any catalog numbers cannot hope that the stamps this way sell properly and Colnect also cannot assist NO NAME collectables into their catalogs... it is logical. Possibly the publishers of the Catalogs may be willing to assist Colnect site with their information?

We work with a few countries eBay sites, including eBay.de. Since most sellers that do provide the catalog number also provide accurate information I don't see a problem with searching all. Mostly, I found that it is preferably to get any results then no results, which is the case with very specific stamp information.

Do you find it easier when searching for stamps yourself on eBay, that searching by catalog numbers provides you with better results?

For uncertain search catalog numbers are not needed of course. Just eBay certain category for the country or area...

But for certain search of the stamp exact number of catalog is needed. But the problem is that other catalogs having the same number in search for the different stamp and the wrong results may come out. Which way can Colnect search be better than direct eBay search? I believe the only it can be better is by several catalog numbers for same stamps are stick together... other options?

If there is support for that idea, I can consider a change.

Perhaps a better way would be to do the search by year,.

I have found that if you enter E Bay by the country you are looking for first, then type in the year of the stamp you are looking for, ie 1946 then chances are the listing will tag most stamps listed for that country.

Perhaps COLNECT members would find that option easier.

That is just my POV of course..

Year search is good of course. But majority of the sellers which put the catalog number into title do not put they issuing year into it... so you will have partial results as well. Besides that, eBay.com has removed sign * form the search so You cannot search for 1960s using 196* which was an excellent option before. Now You need to put exact year 1961 or 1968 otherwise it will show up search for 196
