Do people actively collect music CD's (exchanging and so on, or only buying and selling)? Is is separate from collecting records?

I would like a CD collector category.
I thought about grouping by singer / group. Example: NIRVANA - AC/DC - BECK, etc.
Click on NIRVANA to choose the type of album in sub categories like: Studio Album / Live Album / Compilation Album / Singles / EP / Greatest Hits / etc
Click on Studio Album, and the display shows the year launched, name, cover picture, and of course to check if we have in our collection. Look the example:
(1989) - Bleach (Cover Photo) (the square to mark: Collection/Swap/Wish)
(1991) - Nevermind (Cover Photo) (the square to mark: Collection/Swap/Wish)
(1993) - In Utero (Cover Photo) (the square to mark: Collection/Swap/Wish)
In something like that i was thinking.
Well, hopefully serve my ideas and will soon be able to add that CD category.

Hello [jose27] - nice to see your initiative for starting a new category. I have a few questions:
1/ are there any other existing catalogs of collectible CD's?
2/ Do CD collectors usually exchange items?
3/ Most importantly - are you interested in being the coordinator of a Colnect Collectible CD category? ![]()

Thanks for responding. Here I answer your questions.
1) I know a software called Music Collector, I think it is originally from Holland, but I have not actually tried this program, you have to pay for it, and I prefer something more like Colnect, online and free. The problem I found at this site is using the bar code to identify the CD, that complicates things, because as I put the disc Nevermid of Nirvana's as example, there are editions from USA, Mexico, Brazil, Argentina, Paraguay, Europe, Japan, etc ... so this gives many regions edition.
Another complication is the re-edition of a certain album CD, released in 1989 originally. which was re-released in 1995 for example...
So to simplify, my idea is to put the CD on a general level, global (like wikipedia), regardless of the source and re-released, because in 98% of cases brings the same songs track, very rarely one finds songs bonus in some regions or re-released editions.
The Nevermind as example, just put the original 1991 Album from USA. No others editions or region to avoid complications.
2) They usually exchanged, but not as frequent as in coins for example.
3) I could try, but I have little computing experience, rather I want to bring an idea to facilitate the creation of this category, but if someone can guide me, I could try loading mainly of Rock, Grunge, Alternative, Punk-Rock, etc singer/group bands.
What do you think about this idea?
Thanks Colnect, and keep growing. ![]()

I think this is a good idea, I agree on the what you said about general Wikipedia-like structure of the catalog is better for collectors.
About being a coordinator - there is no need of some advanced computing experience or knowledge. You only need to know how to do basic functions, and you can get explanations, help and advice all along the way from me and from other coordinators.
The question is only will you like to dedicate some of your time to this and be the head responsible for the category? Being a coordinator means:
1/ We first decide on how the catalog structure is going to look like here together.
2/ Uploading some items to get the category started.
3/ Trying to think of how to get more collectors to contribute information.
4/ You are the person that receives the information from contributors and put it on the catalog.
I can't start a category without a willing coordinator, the idea is nice, but it will have to wait for someone that wants to be the head of the category.
What do you think?

About to the root of the organization:
A) What i was thinking is that maybe should be organized by musical genre, such as Rock put primary category and include the sub genres together (Hard Rock - Alternative Rock - Blues Rock - Indie Rock, etc) could be another genre Hip-Hop and its sub genres (Rap - R & B - Metal Rap - etc) Another genre Electronic and its sub genres (House - Techno - Elektro - Euro Dance - etc) I thought about this organization because there are musicians playing national folklore that maybe only in their country of origin are known, for example: Cantores del Alba from Argentina, Luis Alberto del Parana from Paraguay, Caetano Veloso from Brazil, etc. This genre could be Folklore, and sub genre the singer's country.
B) Or simply organize by ABC as an example: (I think this is better, what do you think?)
- 311
- AC/DC
- Aerosmith
- Amy Winehouse
- Andrea Bocelli
- Animal
- Attaque 77
- Audioslave
- Bee Gees
- Beastie Boys
- Beck
- Black Eyed Peas
- Black Sabbath
- Blink 182
- Bloodhoung Gang
- Bob Dylan, ETC .....

If you choose to organize by ABC
Here's an example: we take again Nirvana to look how could be.
1) NIRVANA (First folder, main folder) When you click appears:
1.1) Studio albums 1.2) Live albums 1.3) Compilation albums 1.4) Box sets 1.5) EP
These group are the second folder (1.1 to 1.5)
When you click for example 1.1 (Studio albums) appears:
1.1.1) (1989) - Bleach (Cover Photo) (the square to mark: Collection/Swap/Wish)
1.1.2) (1991) - Nevermind (Cover Photo) (the square to mark: Collection/Swap/Wish)
1.1.3) (1993) - In Utero (Cover Photo) (the square to mark: Collection/Swap/Wish)
When you click for example 1.2 (Live albums)appears:
1.2.1) (1994) MTV Unplugged in New York (Cover Photo) (the square to mark: Collection/Swap/Wish)
1.2.2) (1996) From the Muddy Banks of the Wishkah (Cover Photo) (the square to mark: Collection/Swap/Wish)
1.2.3) (2009)) Live at Reading (Cover Photo) (the square to mark: Collection/Swap/Wish)
When you click for example 1.3 (Compilation albums)appears:
1.3.1) (1992) Incesticide (Cover Photo) (the square to mark: Collection/Swap/Wish)
1.3.2) (2002) Nirvana (Cover Photo) (the square to mark: Collection/Swap/Wish)
1.3.3) (2005) Sliver: The Best of the Box (Cover Photo) (the square to mark: Collection/Swap/Wish)
1.3.4) (2010) Icon (Cover Photo) (the square to mark: Collection/Swap/Wish)
When you click for example 1.4 (Box sets)appears:
1.4.1) (1995) Singles (Cover Photo) (the square to mark: Collection/Swap/Wish)
1.4.2) (2004) With the Lights Out (Cover Photo) (the square to mark: Collection/Swap/Wish)
1.4.3) (2011) Nevermind: The Singles (Cover Photo) (the square to mark: Collection/Swap/Wish)
When you click for example 1.5 (EP)appears:
1.5.1) (1989) Blew (Cover Photo) (the square to mark: Collection/Swap/Wish)
1.5.2) (1992) Hormoaning (Cover Photo) (the square to mark: Collection/Swap/Wish)
Well, this was a complete example ![]()
Thanks Dana for your time

Another option can also be not put if is Studio albums, Live albums, Compilation albums, Box sets, or EP (2nd folder, example above message). Just simply and directly put the discs like that: By year launch
1) NIRVANA (First folder, main folder) When you click appears:
1.1) (1989) Blew (Cover Photo) (the square to mark: Collection/Swap/Wish)
1.2) (1989) Bleach (Cover Photo) (the square to mark: Collection/Swap/Wish)
1.3) (1991) Nevermind (Cover Photo) (the square to mark: Collection/Swap/Wish)
1.4) (1992) Hormoaning (Cover Photo) (the square to mark: Collection/Swap/Wish)
1.5) (1992) Incesticide (Cover Photo) (the square to mark: Collection/Swap/Wish)
1.6) (1993) In Utero (Cover Photo) (the square to mark: Collection/Swap/Wish)
1.7) (1994) MTV Unplugged in New York (Cover Photo) (the square to mark: Collection/Swap/Wish)
1.8 )(1995) Singles (Cover Photo) (the square to mark: Collection/Swap/Wish)
1.9) (1996) From the Muddy Banks of the Wishkah (Cover Photo) (the square to mark: Collection/Swap/Wish)
1.10) (2002) Nirvana (Cover Photo) (the square to mark: Collection/Swap/Wish)
1.11) (2004) With the Lights Out (Cover Photo) (the square to mark: Collection/Swap/Wish)
1.12) (2005) Sliver: The Best of the Box (Cover Photo) (the square to mark: Collection/Swap/Wish)
1.13) (2009) Live at Reading (Cover Photo) (the square to mark: Collection/Swap/Wish)
1.14) (2010) Icon (Cover Photo) (the square to mark: Collection/Swap/Wish)
1.15) (2011) Nevermind: The Singles (Cover Photo) (the square to mark: Collection/Swap/Wish)
I think, it can work this way also, and perhaps is even more practical than the previous message. Because it is not so important to differentiate if is Studio albums, Live albums, Compilation albums, etc I think.
I think a collector just want to easily mark if have or not in their collection a specific CD.
You have the experience, please tell me.
Just to clarify: I'm talking about CD (Compact Disc) category, NOT about cassette or vinyl record.
The vinyl record is very collectible too, but it is another distinct area. I can not help in that area.

[jose27] - I'm sorry for not responding earlier to your posts.
I do , however, still need to get some confirmation from you that you are agree and willing to be the coordinator of the category. You didn't sound very sure before, so I asked again to confirm. I need to know that you understand that it means you will also be responsible for it in the near future. Do you want to do that
If so and you are still interested, I'll be happy to try to pick up where we last left off, design it and get it going. I can go through it with you, I'll ask you questions for what is needed and you will decide how it looks from there on. Of course, ideas and discussions are welcome ![]()

[jose27] - Cool ![]()
You started before with a lot about Navigation. To create the catalog on Colnect, I think it's more comfortable on dedicating on the important pieces of information, and from there we will decide on Navigation of the catalog.
First of all, you mentioned before that:
Just to clarify: I'm talking about CD (Compact Disc) category, NOT about cassette or vinyl record.
The vinyl record is very collectible too, but it is another distinct area. I can not help in that area.
We can create the category as a CD category and leave the option open in the future to add vinyl records as well if we want, and we have contributors/editors interested in this.
Second of all, we need to decide which pieces of information will appear on each collectible page. These will appear on each collectible page and as fields in the document used to add items to the catalog.
So do we need to know of each CD? You have mentioned a few possible fields already: "Album name", "Artist", "Musical Genre", "Year of release", "Type of album" (sub categories like: Studio Album / Live Album / Compilation Album / Singles / EP / Greatest Hits / LP / etc), "Country". What do you think?

First: I think CD should NOT be mixed with Vinyls, it would be a complete mistake. It would be like comparing coins with tokens; both CD and Vinyl are relative to the music, but then you could also put Cassettes or Mp3 on the CD Category.
Also there are hundreds of Cds that do not exist in vinyl
The vinyls collectors generally are not interested in the CDs, and the same about the CD collectors with vinils.
I clearly told ''The vinyl record is very collectible too, but it is another distinct area''
in other words: Another Category
If another person wants to start a Vinyl Category, is fine for me. But please as I said it would be very bad idea put together both in the same category... Create another category, that would be more cool.
Second:
About pieces of information:
1-Album name:
2-Artist:
3-Type of album:
4-Year of release:
5-Musical Genre:
6-Buy Now:
I think in that order should be ordered, by importance

Thank you for your answer.
1/ I understand, the category would be CD's only then. Thank you for explaining your reasons.
2/ About the item information -
a- Is there any other information you'd like to include? For example:
Producer / Production Company
Track list
Cover art
Barcode
b- Are there other CD catalogs that have their own catalog code? Do you think we should include it as information in our catalog?
c- What is the "6-Buy Now:" field?
