It is necessary to separate the orders and medals of the Badges category.

Also think that badges and medals should be separate categories.

Hello everyone,

Is anyone willing to explain what such a category will include - how are "Medals" and "Badges" are defined in this context?

Is there anyone willing to take on the build of this category and be the coordinator of it?

how about if we initially have medals and badges as a sub section in tokens to help it develop and become a stand alone section in its own right? and yes i agree badges and medals should be separate sections eventually.........

I'd prefer to have a coordinator taking this on as a new category. We can use the same definitions as existing tokens category and then modify it as needed for more specific needs.

I collect military medals but only as a side line, if I am buying a coin collection for example and there is some medals involved I will take them also.

In order to get this catagory right you would need to seperate the badges from the medals otherwise you will get very confused, for instance medals can be grouped into military, civil, private, sports and a host of other private or non private organisations such as the Legion,or Masonic to name a couple.

Badges are also grouped into these catagories such as military, police, fire, ambulance, scouts, hunting well you get the point. So you will need two NIFs (one for each catagory) otherwise it will become burdensome.

I am at this point in time an editor of TOKENS, COINS and STAMPS but would be willing to take on the challenge of COORDINATOR for Medals and badges if you like...

Does make sense to have separate categories: one for medals and one for badges.

As you've already been around for a while and a 3-star member, I believe it'll be easy for us to kick start the medals category with you as a coordinator. Do try to create a sample NIF and upload it here and see the instructions on More Collectibles?

Useing the same criteria as the TOKEN catalog it would seem less information is required for MEDALS than for TOKENS, I have ammended the TOKEN NIF to show only the fields that would be required to be filled out.

The most important obviously would be the country code/item number and this can be achieved by useing a two or three letter (higher case) code such as GREAT BRITAIN= GB and then the number 001.

Everything else can be entered in the other fields such as series, description, comments etc.

I have left out the pictures (both back and front ) as these can be entered once the main infomation is in place...

The above can also apply to the NIF catalog for badges.

Great :) Do you have an idea of the navigation for the category? Should it be as in Tokens?

Regarding the Catalog Code, you think there is no need for additional information there besides Country initials + Numbering, to make it easier for the coordinator maybe?

(On a lesser note: In the "Name" column - there is a known official name for the medals?)

i think that as nigel already has experience in collecting medals he would be an excellent coordinator for the section. the nif looks fine but really nigel the original victoria crosses have been struck from the bronze barrels of captured russian cannon from the crimean war...

I see no reason why the navigation cant be the same as TOKENS, TOKENS is simple and to the point, there is not a great deal of information required to explain a MEDAL.

Again, the catalog Code is simple, 3 Country initials maybe better a bit like the country of origin you see on the rear of cars.

As for the "name" column, most collectors of medals will recognize a medal just by adding "Indian Campaign" or The Napoleonic war, or American War etc, most of the MEDAL information should be given in the description.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------LOL, I was merely useing the NIF as an example, I am full y aware that the V.C. was made from captured cannon from Crimea, but thank you for pointing that out so that others who are less enlightened may be educated to the point that they may be persuaded to purchase one.
