The Council of Europe is an European organization that promotes human rights, democracy and the rule of law in Europe. Founded in 1949, it includes 46 member states, 27 of which are members of the European Union and has its headquarters in Strasbourg, France. The best-known body of the Council of Europe is the European Court of Human Rights.
The organization is distinct from the European Union (EU) and not to be confused with European Council or the Council of the European Union, both EU institutions [1] [2].
