- Description:
- A privately ordered and struck on the Moscow State Mint token commemorating those unknown to the public events in the Ivan Kozhedub’s fighter pilot career. Each token is accompanied with a certificate of authenticity (10 x 7,4 cm) from the Mint.
Obverse: a Soviet Lavochkin La-7 fighter “27” over the clouds in the center and a burning American P-51 Mustang fighter behind with 2 войны И.К. (= two wars of I.K. [Ivan Kozhedub]) on top and a round inscription ★УЧАСТНИКАМ НЕИЗВЕСТНЫХ ВОЗДУШНЫХ БОЕВ ПОСВЯЩАЕТСЯ (= “a tribute to the members of the unknown aerial dogfights”).
Reverse: a pair of Soviet MiG-15 jet fighters, the one in the center is firing from its cannons. Three country names are over its canopy США / КНДР / СССР (= USA / DPRK / USSR) and the years 1950 / 1953 are under its wing. The ММД mintmark is under the jet nose together with a logo of the MONETOSS Company (who privately ordered to struck this whole issue). A round inscription ★ «Ваня – бей, а я прикрою!» (=Ivan, strike, I’ll cover you!) on top, and ★ «Таинственный ас Ли Си Цын» (=the mysterious ace Lee See Tsyn) at the bottom.
Ivan Kozhedub was the most successful Soviet (and Allied) WWII Ace with official score of 62(+2) aerial victories over German aircraft. It is believed though that his actual score is as high as 107 victories, but those 40 shot down airplanes had been prescribed to other fighter pilots by the Soviet Command, and the rest 5 victories were classified as they were 5 American (Allied) aircraft (two P-51 and three B-17).
On February 19, 1945, he became the only Soviet pilot to shoot down a Messerschmitt Me-262 jet fighter.
On April 17, 1945, Kozhedub faced dozens of American B-17 bombers in the air over Berlin which were under attack by the German fighters and decided to help the Allied crews. He fired a single burst to get a German FW-190 off a B-17’s tail but suddenly was attacked by American P-51’s escorting their bombers. A long burst from a long distance missed his fighter but got him so angry that he turned his La-7 into a good position and shot down both P-51’s scoring two aerial victories at once. The 2nd Mustang exploded in the air.
Later the first severely damaged P-51 managed to land on the Soviet Army territory and its black American fighter pilot insisted that he had been attacked by a German FW-190 “with red nose”. Nobody argued with that point of view and the incident was allowed to fade away. However, the whole dogfight was filmed by an installed in the La-7 camera and the video evidence of the event was recently unveiled to the public.
During the Korean War Colonel I.Kozhedub was a Commander of the 324th Fighter Division (April 1951 – January 1952) but it’s believed that he himself never took part in air combats in Korea. The total of 216 aerial victories were achieved by the fighter pilots under his command with only 27 own jets down and 9 Soviet pilots lost in action.
