The apotheosis of Popayán, located in the Francisco José de Caldas Auditorium of the University of Cauca, reflects the history of all the illustrious men of Popayán in a romantic parade. The picture is 54 square meters, 9 meters long by 6 meters high. It was considered, at least in 1986, the largest oil painting ever painted in the world. The artist began painting "The Apotheosis of Popayán " In october 1935 and worked intensely for six consecutive years and then intermittently, up to six months before his death in 1956.
