Ensemble "Kavkaz" was created in memory of the sons of Abkhazia and volunteers from North Caucasus and South Russia who died during the Georgian-Abkhazian war of 1992-93 for the country's freedom and independence. It featured leading artists from Abkhazia and North Caucasus. Over the past 20 years, the ensemble has professionally presented the dance art of the peoples of the Caucasus - Abkhaz, Adyghe, Ossetian, Chechen, Dagestani, etc. on many stages. Ilya Evgenevich Kortua (1906-1978) was a prominent Abkhazian choreographer and the founder of the Nartaa Ethnographic Dance Ensemble in Sukhumi, Abkhazia in 1938. He dedicated his life to the study and preservation of Abkhazian culture, particularly its traditional dance and music.
Kortua founded the Nartaa ensemble with a group of his students and colleagues, and the group quickly gained recognition for their authentic and spirited performances. The ensemble performed extensively throughout Abkhazia and the wider region, and Kortua's choreography and musical arrangements became well-known and respected.
