- Genuine issued Somaliland stamps ended in 1960 when they gained their independence from being a British Protectorate and became part of Somalia. All stamps used for postage in Somaliland are Somalia stamps from July 1, 1960 forward. Somaliland has no authority to issue their own stamps and has no postal office since 1991 due to conflict with Somalia.
Various sources conflict as to the year of issue for these counterfeit illegal stamps. Several sources claim it to be 1996. The most credible source who obtained a cover directly from the source of which he writes was "A British agent" date them as made in 1998. We are placing them in the 1997 category due to this conflict. There is no solid evidence that they existed before this time. Most references are based on lies presented by this agent who continued to produce illegal stamps in the name of Somaliland through 2002. That agent was Mr. Juan Carlos Marino Montero who was the owner of France Phlatelie located in the U.K. and the Mayfair International Security Printers located in France. The printer that applied these fake overprints and surcharges on the British Machins is unknown.
