The XVIII Bolivarian games of 2017 were hold in the city of Santa Marta, Colombia, between 11 and 25 November 2017, with the participation of athletes from 11 countries competing in 34 sports, in 50 disciplines. The Bolivarian Games are held every four years and depend on the Bolivarian Sports Organization (ODEBO) which, in turn, is part of the Pan American Sports Organization (PASO), a subsidiary of the International Olympic Committee.
The Bolivarian Games are held at the regional level among athletes from the Bolivarian nations Bolivia, Chile, Colombia, Ecuador, Panama, Peru and Venezuela, countries freed by Simón Bolívar, a man who dedicated his life to give freedom to oppressed peoples by the Spanish Crown. This time the XVIII Bolivarian Games of Santa Marta 2017 were attended by the following guest countries: El Salvador, Guatemala, Paraguay and Dominican Republic
The Bolivarian Games are considered to be the beginning of the Olympic cycle which, after the Odesur and the Pan American Games, is topped by the Olympic Games.
