- Description:
- Obverse: Gilded portrait of HM King Charles III facing left; designer on the lapel SR (Steven Rosati). Ruler ↻ at left CHARLES III and ⤸ at right D • G • REX.
Reverse: Features a circular interpretation of the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier at the National War Memorial in Ottawa, Ontario. The three rings allude to the sarcophagus’s three-tiered construction in dark Caledonia granite, as depicted in the centre of the design, while the Tomb’s four base corner pieces, three replicas of the Memorial Cross (gilded), each bearing the Royal Cypher of a different ruling monarch (George V, George VI, Elizabeth II) since the award’s inception in 1919, plus a replica of a gilded poppy, are artfully positioned around the edge, ultimately forming a more circular interpretation to help frame the top-down view. The Tomb’s bronze overlay is also re-created, with branches of maple and laurel leaves wrapped around a medieval sword and First World War-era helmet; these are surrounded by roses and poppies (in the 11 o’clock position) that have been laid in commemoration of those who selflessly gave their all while serving their country; engraver at right PY (Pandora Young), date at center 2025. Reverse: Features a split image that honours The Royal Canadian Legion’s past, present and future, as the organization celebrates its 100th anniversary in 2026. On the right is a depiction of two present-day Legion members in Legion dress reflecting on the past, which is represented by the scene on the left. This snapshot of history is filled with symbols representing Canada’s contribution to the Allied effort during the First World War and the sacrifices that gave rise to The Royal Canadian Legion: a Canadian infantryman, symbolizing the Army’s unifying effect and pivotal engagements like the Battle of Vimy Ridge; above him, the Royal Aircraft Factory Scout Experimental 5a (S.E.5a) aircraft flown by many Canadian aces during the war; and on the horizon, HMCS Niobe, a Diadem-class protected cruiser commissioned in 1910 into service with the newly formed Naval Service of Canada (later the Royal Canadian Navy). A Poppy in each half—one above, one below—represents an enduring cycle of Remembrance, connecting generations and honouring the pledge to never forget those who served and sacrificed in defence of freedom; engraver at right LM (Laurie McGaw). State name in ribbon ↷ at top CANADA.
