Longer item names approved

Postby tcawe »

Dear members,

We limit the length of many fields on Colnect for two main reasons: database constraints and visual appearance of pages. However, sometimes we see the limits are too strict and need be changed.

Previously, we've limited the length of the item name field to 60 characters. This is sufficient for most items in most categories but in some categories this has proved to be an annoying limitation that many editors and coordinators requested changing. As we've improved our database infrastructure and as we have responsive design, many past considerations for the 60 characters limitations don't exist in the same way.

We're glad to announce that the following categories now have a higher limitation

Coins - 90 characters

Medals and Decorations - 90 characters

Postcards - 80 characters

IMPORTANT:

1/ item names should be a short title that explains how the item can be referred to in a unique way. To the extent possible, it's better if names are unique. If a group of 50 people have 3 people named John, it can be confusing to use only John for all of them.

2/ For any relevant additional information, we have the description field which we greatly encourage using. If you wish to describe a whole set of items or have more interesting information to share that would not fit in the description, please consider writing an article on our Wiki.

Your comments are welcome, be that requesting higher limits in other categories (explain why exactly and provide examples) or anything else :)
